New guy here looking to buy

Thanks for the tips maxxkatt, I went with the Legend and been getting a little time digging. Still digging quite a bit of trash but finding a little bit of clad too. Someday I might get lucky and find something good:impatient:

If you don't mind used, there's some great deals out there on Equinoxes from Minelab or look at the MX Sport from White's (I have one as a back-up/loaner and swing it from time to time just for kicks and it's a great machine too, if you want new then Simplex, Double Score, Legend would be my suggestion. Definitely look at waterproof machines and headphones though. I don't know about the displays on the Nokta machines but the 'Nox 800, MX Sport, E-Trac and CTX3030 {all machines that I currently have) are all good on my 68 year old "tired eyes"...

Good choice. Never used the Legend, but there are many good reports as the best buy for the bucks and some say it is every as good as the 600 or 800 and even some of the $1,600 detectors. Trash is a function of location. For instance I hunt in metro north Atlanta. I have quite a few CW sites in parks within 20 min of my home. But, these are trashy parks full of pop tops, pull tabs, bottle caps, aluminum foil tab tops, crunched foil. And the truth is the Legend, 600, 800, 700,900, xp2 all have problems with this type of junk. There are a few adjustments on the XP2 than can help minimize digging some junk. But even so, it is still a lot of digging.

If you have totlots and volley ball courts, hit them pretty regular this summer and I promise you will find some jewelry. Easy detecting and very easy digging and not a lot of junk. Any ocean beaches near by. Then lucky you. I am 7 hours from Florida, SC and NC beaches.

hitting open fields where you suspect there are old home sites from your historic aerials (www.historicaerials.com) research. you will be happy to find iron junk or broken pottery because that is also where the old coins are likely to be located.

sidewalks with the grass area between the curb and sidewalk in older parts of town often are productive. The bottom line is a six inch deep silver dime will be found by the Legend, 600,800,700,900, AT Pro, XP2, Manticore or even a vanquish or ace detector.

Use your stock search mode settings on the Legend. Really learning your different settings is the key to successful metal detecting. Good permissions and lots of time hunting are also important. You got a really good detector from a really good mfg.

The Legend like many other of the most recent simultaneous multi frequency detectors has really good target IDs that you can bank on to accurate down to about 8" with the stock coil. Learn the target IDs of your most common targets, even US clad coins if you don't mind digging them....they are instant cash money.....and for the most common undamaged trash targets like the varieties of aluminum pull tabs, aluminum screw caps and steel bottle caps and other steel/iron targets that are common in your area. Memorize the IDs and tones and have fun.
