Need help Identifying

Found this piece today and not sure if it’s a kids play coin or a real one. Found confederate and Union mini balls near by and a small musket ball.

Are these faked easily? I’m just curious as to why it’s where it is here in Virginia. Cut to use as a form of payment for something that wasn’t worth the whole coin?

Virginia can definitely produce pistareens, I've seen quite a few posted by other VA members. IMO it's genuine.

Haven't seen pistareens faked much. Me and my crew are in Virginia as well and I think we're up to about 12 of the same cuts in one location, dig through my posts for the "colonial haul threads" and you'll see them.

As you suspected the cut is used to provide lower value since the metals had their true value back then. Great save!

Exceptional recovery. Here we are, barely one month into the new year, and it looks like your 2023 season is off to a great start! I'm guessing this one could be a bit tricky to top, but that's for sure nothing to complain about!
