Hi new to the hobby, my 540 makes a lot of static how do I deal with the problem.

Hi Duggy.

The static is most likely EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). Try reducing the 540's sensitivity.

My 540 is typically pretty quiet. One in a while I do get on properties that have a lot of hot rocks/coke and it chatters like crazy. I've had trouble with buried electric dog fences too. In general though, changing the Sensitivity or going to a smaller coil helps a lot. Good luck and keep trying different locations.

No problems here either, other than not finding much. :D

I have a mylab 540 on the way. It's the pro pack so the 8-in coil is included which is what I plan on using as my go-to coil. When is the larger coil indicated?

Where is your detector when it "makes a lot of static", like inside your house, in a car or in a backyard in an urban/suburban area with lots of power lines and WiFi?

Grandpaw, I think you'll like your new Pro Pack. The 12" is a bit heavy for me but I do use it when I want to cover a lot of ground. Big yards, fields, etc. Just a heads up if you're new. The bigger coil, for me at least, does make it more difficult to pick out good targets if there are multiple signals under the coil; takes practice. The 8" and 10" are my 'go to' coils most of the time. Have fun!
