MAY FLIES SUCK!

I don't know about that, but I will say they are annoying... all bugs are. (With the possible exception of butterflies.) 😉 Does anyone else in the Midwest ever have the impression that we get mayflies in June, and june bugs in May? I'm not sure how true this actually is, but I do recall the thought crossing my mind in previous years. Thus far, we haven't seen much of either, but already the ticks & mosquitoes have emerged.

The south and some of the Midwest is about to get real buggy.

There are 17-year cicadas and 13-year cicadas. Last time they emerged in the same year was 1803. Lewis and Clark probably saw them

Next time will be 221 years from now.
There may be a trillion of them.

Coming in the next week or two.

Interesting... since they occur in large numbers every 17 years, why do you suggest the next occurrence would be 221 years from now? Am I missing something?

Edit: Oh, I read your post again and realized you're saying that both the 13- and 17-year insects are expected to emerge together this year, which happens rarely.

There are two types. One appears every 17 years. The other appears every 13 years. The only time things line up for both to appear in the same year is every 221 years.

The 17 year cicada will reappear in 2041. The 13 year cicada will be back in 2037.

Stupid climate change :frustrated:

Who knows about the fish flies in Michigan? They come in so thick that the roads are like ice. Insane!

Better than all the ticks!

Steve
100% Ticks (at least where I live) pose a bigger health threat than rattlesnakes, bears, coyotes , ground bees..etc. I know many people that have been affected/crippled from Lyme disease!

True story. I'm a fisherman and I have seen many "fishfly" hatches in my lifetime. Many years ago we lived in a small town in northern Michigan called Indian River. They always had a pretty fair fourth of July fireworks display. Wife and I took our two kids there for the light show. While there, just before the finale I noticed a cloud rising from the water and someone mentioned it was getting foggy. I told my wife to grab the kids as we are OUT OF HERE! It was a two block walk back to our car and just before we got there the screaming started. Yep, a major Mayfly hatch had just occurred. By the time we got on the road for home you could hardly see out of the windshield. As Mr. T would say, Pity the fool for staying! :rofl2:

Looks like your from MA, try along the coast If you can, sea breeze around here kicks them right out. Just not the ticks. Got one about a month ago and its literally a pain in the butt. Had to take antibiotics for it just in case.
