I ran across this webpage that allows me to search digitized copies of newspapers throughout Virginia. It's great for finding out information about locations that may no longer exist. Sometimes you can find old photos of a location that you're interested in hunting. Also, it's really neat looking at advertisements from bygone eras. There are many ways to filter your search, so you can pinpoint the information you're looking for. Anyway, hopefully some of you may find this useful!

Using the above resource I was able to find a map of my local area from 1820, near Hampden-Sydney College, which shows the location of old Taverns, Tanyard, the old Prince Edward Courthouse, etc. These buildings no longer exist, so this map will help me locate places to detect. Prince Edward county was founded in 1754, split off from Amelia County. This map helps me to see where the majority of occupation had been, and I can focus on these areas. Now, I just need to get permission to hunt!

This could come in handy, because I'm planning on heading up to Virginia in the next month or two. Not gonna have a lot of time to detect but want to get in some. I have family up in the Harrisonburg area and would love if anyone knows any areas there where detecting is allowed.
