Got out this afternoon for the fourth hunt with my new Equinox 900. Went back to my favorite spot on the bluffs overlooking the Hudson River. This spot continues to give, grudgingly sometimes, but the reward is there if willing to put in the work.
Had to run the 900 in Park 1 mode to quiet it down with all the iron present. Found my usual allotment of shotgun shells and square nails. I was about 75 yards from where I found 2 KGII Half Pennies recently, exploring a path between two bluff tops. I'm digging everything due to relics and buttons here, plus the VDI's are not familiar and they bounce around a lot.
Got a nice tone and VDI bounced from mid 50's to high 60's. Expectations were low, but it did sound different than other signals I had gotten. This is in the woods, so I dug a big plug. Finally the pin pointer indicates a target is my hand. Something small, flat and thin. I'm thinking it may be a flat button. Give it the love rub, but there is no shank - instead I see a bust facing left, my favorite image of King George II! But the coin is so small! Its like a KGII half penny got shrunk down to half size.
Before today I had never seen a farthing in person, much less hold one in my hand. But there it is - beautiful Britania on the back and the date - 1734!
So I'm basking in the moment, taking photos and enjoying an adrenalin rush. Finally I get it together, rescan the hole, and the signal is the same! Oh man! Get in the hole with the pin pointer and right where the farthing just came from is another signal. Carefully dug some more.
Another coin pops out. This one is bigger. It is pretty smooth, but can see a left facing bust, so I think it is a KGII half penny.
I stick the pin pointer back in the hole and it sounds off again! This can't be happening! And it wasn't! I got a decent chunk of square nail on the 3rd try. Oh well.
I will let the coins dry and then try to gently clean them. The farthing has excellent detail, the half penny - not so much. Will post photos after cleaning. The farthing moves into first place as my oldest coin, unseating the KGII Half Penny dated 1737 found a couple weeks ago.
Thanks for reading along on my epic hunt. A couple firsts for me. The farthing still has me mesmerized!
