Question have seen time to time some folk use a sleeve over the coil cable for protection? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I guess, like the broken coil tabs and stuff, some people need extra protection. In 50 years I have yet to break a part of any metal detector. I don't see anything wrong with them. I've never heard anyone complain about one. If I were to get one I'd first check with one of the Sponsors on FMDF. If no luck, the Anderson cover looks good for the price.

Here’s essentially a cut and paste of what I posted in another thread about a year ago when this question came up regarding a particular brand of coil wire covers marketed specifically for metal detectors:

My personal impression is that the product is intended mostly for cosmetic purposes - basically personalizing your machine by putting a little lipstick on the pig ;). I imagine it has the benefit of more easily picking out your machine among a sea of similar models if you tend to go to group hunts or events. And sure, the covers probably perform a minor function for protecting against minor cuts on the wire, although like hoser said, I’ve never had this be an issue with any of my machines so far. The main drawback I can think of is that it seems like it might be more difficult to clean - lots of crevices to hold dirt and mud on the Snake Skinz. I’m not a salt beach hunter, but I imagine the cleaning issue would be huge in that case. I may be wrong, but I believe the Snake Skinz are porous enough to allow salt water and mist to get through to the cable, while simultaneously making it more difficult to rinse that salt off - therefore maybe leading to faster breakdown of the coil cable?

Edit: Heck, if the Skinz hold enough dirt and mud, I guess the same cleaning issue could be a concern for dirt diggers, too. The dirt in the Skinz can lead to more abrasion on the cable as it rubs than it might ordinarily get if you just kept it naked and hose it down once in a while. Kind of like wrapping the coil wire in sandpaper?

Disclaimer: I’ve never bothered with or felt the need for any coil wire covers/protectors for any of my machines, past or present

I agree with others that a coil cable sleeve is done just for looks. However I love no idea if the cover would expand wide enough to allow for the connector plug to pass through. Also, I would think that:

a. When detecting in the water the sleeve would increase the cable movement
b. When detecting in muddy areas the sleeve would trap some mud

That said, what I would like to have one of the colorful and adhesive plastic covers to place all around the screen cover, and below the screen. I have noticed that some of the Manticore users in the UK have such covers. But again, that's only for looks and nothing else.

I find there are much better things than my MD screen to look at, as I comb the beach. YMMV.
I do understand. I wish I could comb any saltwater beach nearby, but there aren't any where I live at. The nearest one would be in Anchorage, but it would not be productive at all because the water is too cold for any swimmers who my drop any treasures, and the sand is much like a silty/soft mud one can end stuck in it. Some people lose their lives when getting stuck in the mud of Turnagain Arm. Anchorage is about 380 miles from where I live at. The only thing I may be able to detect are school playgrounds, local parks and things like that. However, I will have a few opportunities to try the manticore's gold Prospecting Mode starting this summer, but the snow will probably last through most of April.

Unless you have a Excalibur or Sovereign I would say a cover for the cable would not be needed. Now if you have either the Excal or Sovereign models with stock coils than do everything you can to keep them preserved. Worse cable ever...
