Returned a Garrett ATPro for repair

Unless a unit is DOA, I don’t know of any warranty which offers to pay your costs of returning a defective produce for repair or replacement.

I also use the "Wiggle" method BUT, if the detector comes with a pin point function then it should work and work correctly.
Garrett will take care of you and you never know they may throw in an extra or two for your trouble.

I'll be sending mine in during the off season to,
the pinpoint button fell out this summer,
I still have it, it pops out very easily.
and I'm afraid of water getting down into the circuits.
the customer service is very good, should be as good as new when it comes back.

I've had mine apart, and there really isn't a way for that button to fall out...

Huh...

I guess I'm venting here. (My first post and It's to complain a bit). I'm new to metal detecting and bought an ATpro a couple of months ago.
I just returned it because the pinpointer didn't work. The coil would register a Target, then I'd move the coil off to the side where I wasn't getting a reading and I'd hold the coil about an inch off the ground and then push the pin pointer button and swing the coil back over the target area. Instead of increasing in volume when I went over the target area it would remain the same audio volume over a large area. In other words the pinpointer is not working. I called Garrett and spoke with a gentleman there and I threw a penny on the ground outside and let him actually listen to what was going on over the speaker on my cell phony. The metal detector behaved exactly the way I described above when I attempted to use the pinpointing function over the penny. The gentleman from Garrett told me that there was probably just some metal deeper down in the ground or something like that. The reason he gave made no sense at all (I've been having this issue now for the last three times I went out.)
The metal detector is only a couple months old. He told me to mail it back to Garrett (that it was up to me to pay postage back to Texas) and Garrett would pay postage when they sent it back to me. I just got back from the post office and postage with insurance came to about $30. I'm not happy about paying another $30 to return a flawed product for repair work.
I know that the ATpro is a very popular metal detector. Has anyone else here experienced this same problem with the pinpointer?

Thanks
RDW

What's the big idea OP? Asking Garrett to stand behind their product

Don't worry, they know after the 3rd or 4th time returning it, you'll get tired of paying shipping, and just stop sending it in.

Not sure if this is still a relevant topic to the OP but I thought I would post anyway.

I just did a test with my ACE 350. I can not confirm this for a fact but I'm assuming the PinPoint feature on my ACE works exactly the same as on the AT Pro. If that's the case then my findings may help explain what was happening to your machine. My assumption was that the PP function does NOT discriminate targets. In other words regardless of what you have your discrimination set to the PP will pick up any metal in your pinpoint area. I confirmed this by setting my machine to Coin discrimination and also eliminated the nickel notch. I placed a copper penny and a pull tab on the ground about 10" apart in an area with no targets in the ground. My machine gave an audible tone for the penny but nothing for the pull tab (which is how I had the machine discriminated) when I swung over both with the coil. However when I used the PP it gave a tone when the coil was both over the penny and pull tab. I confirmed this further by removing the penny from the test area and swung again. No audible tone for the pull tab as it was set to be discriminated out but when I used the PP it picked up the pull tab.

What you may have been experiencing was the PP picking up other metals in the ground in the same area that your good target was located. Not saying that as a fact but its a very possible explanation. Hope that made sense.

I had to send my ATPRO back twice, for a different problem each time. It was still under warranty then, and Garrett paid for all the shipping.

I do use the pinpoint feature, and that works fine for me.

Not sure I understand. I sent back two pin pointers to Garret and they paid complete shipping fees to and from their facility. I didn't pay a dime. Both pin pointers were under warranty and they sent me a brand new pointer as replacements. That is the kind of customer service I have seen with Garret. I am not a Garret guy, but they have good CS from my experience. But two faulty AT pin pointers in a span of two years is not ideal either. Clearly not superb product. In fact, I may be moving to the new Teknetics or Fisher pin pointers soon..

Spenglure, don't waste your time with a Fisher F Pointer. I got one with my first detector, an F2. In my experience it does not perform anywhere near as well as a AT pp or Whites TRX. It's less expensive then these two but doesn't perform anywhere near these two either. Tuned to where it just becomes quiet it will detect to a range of about .25 - .5 inch. I gave it away to someone without a pin pointer so he would have something to use while he researched pin pointers.

I returned my AT Pro for repair also. (The damage, I'm convinced to this day, was my fault... all the vibration from carting it around behind my bike in a bike trailer loosened the control box/coil connection).

I did have to pay to ship to Garrett's headquarters (TX) from Wisconsin plus insurance, but I don't recall being too upset about that, probably because I felt a least partially at fault for the damage. Plus Garrett pays the return shipping so I felt it was fair trade.

That said, the spectacular service I received from Garrett quickly replaced any negative thoughts I may have had about the experience. Not only did they repair the loose connection, they sent me a brand new coil to boot, even though my detector was at or past its warranty. Customer service was super prompt and friendly.

All in all, I couldn't happier with the service I received from Garrett and have heard just about nothing but positive reviews from other customers. I am sure you will end up happy with your transaction.

Those are the old ones. They just launched two weeks ago the new ones that have specs lining up to Garret. The old Fisher/bounty hunter/teknetics pin pointer was indeed trash I had one. But the new ones look promising.

This is what I’m talking about. Seems to hit a lot deeper than my Garret and its waterproof. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PSDnQvIWx5M

That does look very promising. My mistake in not having heard about it.

Oh yeah no big deal. This one seems to pick up small targets farther away than my Garrett does. If I can pick up a silver dime 3" away that's really good and should help me with my digging and prevent impact damage to coins. Price seems right. Might as well give it a try.

Just as a side note, if you have a DD coil, using the wiggle method completely prevents you from having to even use the pin pointer on the device (it's faster, too). Basically, just wiggle the center part (where the coils overlap) over the target and make it go "DING DING DING DING" and move backwards until the dinging stops. The object is exactly at the tip of your coil at that point. No pin pointer required.

I wouldn't even KNOW if my pin pointer worked. Never had a need to use it, with the DD coil.

Cheers,

Skippy

I gotta go with Skippy. I've had problems with the pinpointer on my ATP but always use the wiggle method and its a lot faster recovery me. Just saying... you dont really need that Pinpointer on the machine if your carrying one on the belt

So I'm thinking that if the pinpointer built into the AT Pro is useless why do they have it? Would it not make sense to eliminate it altogether and perhaps lower the price a little? I do have a handheld garrett pinpointer also, and it picks up large objects under two or three inches of dirt but on small objects like a coin, it almost has to touch them before it sends an audio.
