Ever wonder whether those were really found yesterday, or found at all?

The old message still is valid "the man behind the machine is as important as the machine". Steve in so az

It doesnt matter what you swing you can still find good stuff. The first detector i used was a 101 and found a large cent. It was my first coin i ever found. It matters about RESEARCH and how you hunt. If you go to a place that is new there may be a chance that you can find something old but not probable. If you go to a place that is old then you are going to find old stuff. Makes pretty good sense to me. That is why i get the oldest maps that i can find.

Steve, if you've mastered that 1266X, and somebody else has mastered a Pioneer 101, and the two of you go head-to-head, you are still going to flat-out find deeper stuff than he does.

I like to put it this way:

A skilled operator with a poor machine will outhunt an unskilled operator with an excellent machine.

BUT, if the skill levels are the same, the operator with the better detector will consistently outhunt the operator with a lesser machine.

I have owned a White's MXT for almost 2 years now, but I have only gotten to pull it out and hunt 3 or 4 times and have found nothing of note. But in the same areas that I researched and walked prior to having my detector I have found some very random but neat relics. If all goes as planned I will be 'breaking' in my MXT near Averasboro very soon. Not more than 5 miles from this location is where I found an 1861 Republic of Colombia button on top of a dirt pile by eye where a small group of houses had been 'dozed over. Hopefully, if this hunt ends up happening, I will have gotten the basics of my MXT down and will have some neat pictures to post. I will wish for the old relics/coins, but to me, hunting in general is what it is all about. Most of my pictures on here are fairly old, and when I get out and eyeball for any substantial amount of time I find something on most of these excursions. I guess what I am saying is, yes knowing your detector helps, yes some of it is luck, and most is still just digging those targets. Or in my case, opening your eyes and really looking for what is there.

No not really, because it mostly depends where you have to hunt, if you can hunt someplace like Miami beach you are going to find $bling$ $bling$ first time out, but if you are hunting in my back yard in WV you will find nails, bolts, car parts, bullets, tin roofs etc. as being new or an old detector, if yo swing just about any metal detector over a shallow silver coin and dig it, you will find it.

Ove the years I have heard many whispered tales accusing famous treasure hunters of salting their stories, and exhibiting purchases as finds.

Reasons to do this?

1. To build reputation

2. To look superior to other treasure hunters

3. And especially to sell detectors ("Look what I found with this machine! Buy it from me and you'll find these things, too!")

I think #3 is probably used the most... to sell detectors.

A certain detector company has had cameras at the ready on two fairly recent mind blowing finds. I think we know who I'm talking about and what detector they are trying to hype up :)

Some guys have books to sell so all they show is amazing gold items they "found", some guys are dealers and have detectors to sell, and some guys have websites they want you to visit.

It goes with the territory and if it seems to good to be true, it's probably a publicity stunt ;)

Ed, I've dug several old silver coins that looked as good as they did the day they were dropped - no tarnish, no stains, and still shiny.

Here's an uncirculated 1943 Merc I dug in my back yard:

Perhaps it's the pristine Illiniois soil?

Not being argumentative, but how did you... find... a coin that wasn't circulated... in.... your... back yard?

Nortonics is just mad because he lives in Elk River.

J/K Nortonics.

Yeah, I think some are fake finds, but for the most part, I think real detectorists can sniff out "those people" pretty quickly.

EDIT: Wow, just realized how old this post is. Sorry I posted.

Honesty

In all walks of life we have Honest and dishonest people. Handing a Liar a metal detector Don't make them Honest, it makes them a Liar with a metal detector!!!

All in All

I enjoy looking at the posts and I can usually tell if someone is stretching the truth. Like the person who needed an 1853 silver quarter to complete his collection and he said he was going out to find it and posted 4 hours later he found it in an old park. It was probably the site of an old park that had a coin store built on it. LOL. I really enjoy the forum so I hope all posts keep on coming

real?

My take on it is simple. It does happen and will continue to happen. There are those people who are on ego trips and those who spend a lot of money on a metal detector so they have to show something to justify spending that much money on a machine. I only believe those vids that show full digs where they show the readings, hear the sounds, and then show the dig. There was even one of them where it was fake because as soon as he put his lesche in one side you could see the whole outline of the plug before he got to the other side. People are people, some are honest, some are not. You choose what you want to believe.

It's even worse in my other hobby - adult slowpitch softball. To hear these guys talk, they are hitting the ball out of the park with every swing, and making fielding plays that major-leaguers couldn't make.

And it's unbelievable how many of them pay big bucks to have their bats illegally altered so as to send the ball farther.

I wouldn't write off all that show their finds by whether or not they show the whole dig, as for me, most likely will not ever have a full video, I'd just show the find, or maybe the hole too, why? because I live with chronic pain, and any extra work/play that is unnecessary will just exhaust my energy level which leaves me with less to hunt, plus, I usually find junk, and am not carrying around a video camera to get muddy, If I ever find something awesome, I will be sharing it whether I have a full video or not. I think most mders hunt n show that way. As far as those that are selling MD equipment, books, hunts etc, yea, they need to to take the extra step and the viewer needs to use a grain of salt.

Who in the heck resurrected this old thread? :?:

Hey, it's a fun thread, and some interesting new information has been posted this second time around.

I'd think that a treasure hunter like yourself would realize that old things can often be good things!

I think your wrong. I have been detecting for three summers now but put every free minute I have into it. I only post what I find but I'm searching out the old coins. Since getting the Etrac and learning what's it's telling me with deep signals I've done very well. Maybe you just need to find and research new spots.

I have only seen two posts on here that I truly doubted the validity of their claim. I moved on without comment while others just gushed over the find. I think most on here are in it for the love of the hobby and to share knowledge and success as well as to see what people are finding.

Porsche, did I ever tell you about the time I found six gold rings and a 10-pound solid silver bar all in the same hole?

I would normally have been pretty excited, but since I had just found a dozen 20-dollar gold pieces a few feet away it wasn't such a big deal.
